Translation of Time: notes by the artist in connection with the installation at Stiftung Burg Kniphausen (1999)

The project consists of an installation of painted objects.

Since 1993 I have been making three-dimensional paintings. A decisive factor in these works is the relationship between the object and surrounding space. The most recent series of works under the rubric "Translation of Time" (1998-2000) have evolved as analogues of the human body; they explore physical qualities of smoothness, roughness, softness. For this reason I use a variety of specific materials: transparent emulsion (incorporating pigment and plaster), synthetic wool and oil paint. The paintings carry several bright layers of oil paint, which give them weight, high reflectiveness and the appearance of inner luminosity. The synthetic wool, which occupies the craters (series VIII) and the edges (series IX) of the paintings, creates the impression of hair, or mist. The emulsion evokes stone, maybe marble, which contrasts with the wool and oil paint. The edges of the painted objects are either painted and sculpturally formed (series VIII) or "dissolved" in space (series IX) by the use of wool. The objects of series IX all utilise a straightforward 50 x 70 cm rectangular base form. The colour of all the objects is similar, but varies minimally, as do the sculptural elements at the edges of the objects. The display of a row of paintings instigates a conflict between concepts of repetitiveness and individuality.

In open space, the sense of order among the objects seems to dissolve. This is important to the overall impression. As an ensemble, the paintings create a spatial-musical atmosphere.
