The artist and her work

I was born in Oldham, England. Brought up near the Penines I immersed myself in the countryside of this area. Now residing in Wales I continue to absorb the creative impulses which nature inspires. Some scenes taken from my many rambles may be captured as backdrop to my Rennaissance inspired paintings. I began my art training at Oldham College where my development and interest in the painting of the figure and portraiture was stimulated. Early influences being Rembrandt for his cairiscuro and enigmatic faces and Stanley Spencer for his purposeful narrative works.

There followed community arts work and a two year stint teaching Art & Design, where I particularly enjoyed imparting hands on skills in life drawing. Drawing being a major component in my work and the underpinning to ant artistic education. I then studied a Masters Degree in Painting at the University of Hull, Scarborough Campus. Under the tutorage of realist painter Steve Whitehead I develoloped my technical and intellectual approaches to painting and its contexts. Looking for inspiration in both areas to the oppulance and inherent philosophiesof the Rennaissance and the Mannerists I developed a singular style. In particular the use of female worthies to establish a narrative dialogue. These strong women from Biblical, Mythological and Literary tales upturn preconcieved notions of beauty in art and wider society.

I, as the artist, utilize my own physicality and play with the psychology of self introspection. These images have great relevance in today's image obsessed world. Where women are bombarded again with supposed ideals, such as the size zero debate, and controversy reigns as to whom is to blame.
