URBAN MYTHS
My current body of work,Urban Myths, is derived from notebooks and journals kept while traveling and living in England and Vancouver BC, during the past decade. These works are a cumulative visual diary of glimpses and impressions that explore the relations between self and urban environments. I am fascinated by the layering of history and experiences in cities, and the visual memories left behind in the architectural elements. My personal painter's philosophy is that art should contain a mystery to be unraveled and take the viewer to a new place or a new way of seeing. In my interpretation, I strive for a contrast between representation and abstract, evoking ethereal moods rather than a literal interpretation. My paintings reflect my fascination with architectural spaces, the layering of history, and the unexpected solitude of human experience that occurs therein. Created with successive layers of images, written messages, texture and colour, the paintings fuse techniques of painting and sculpture, and represent the excavating of secrets and unrevealed life.
